    Egret at Fort Mose 01

Considered a precursor to the Underground Railroad, Fort Mose Historic State Park was the first legally sanctioned free black community in what would become the United States. Escaped slaves from the Carolinas found sanctuary at the fort as well as sustenance, with archeological finds showing a diet largely pulled from the rich salt marsh estuary. When East Florida was ceded to Britain by the Spanish, most residents of Mose left for Cuba.
