Quarter Moon, Big Talbot Island State Park, Florida. 2020.

Quick-moving clouds slide across a waning quarter moon at Boneyard Beach in Big Talbot Island State Park. Swift currents in Nassau Sound have carved against tall coastal bluffs, toppling long-standing trees and shearing away coastline. The trees, bleached under the southern sun and salty wind, lay like skeletons along the water’s edge, blocking and breaking up further wind and wave erosion. The remaining coastal forests weave a tight web of roots through the sand and soil, securing and buttressing the ancient dunes from the committed pursuit of the sea. Big Talbot is one part of a vast coastal system in northeast Florida that works to protect Jacksonville and its surrounding developed areas from rising seas and stronger storms.
Captured on Ilford FP4 Plus 125 4×5 sheet film with an Ilex-Calumet 215mm Lens. Scanned with an Epson Perfection v850 Pro. Composed after moon rise at Big Talbot Island State Park in Duval County, Florida on October 10, 2020.
