Pond Cypress 01
Pond Cypress grow in the shallow, pocketed depressions found in Florida’s flatwoods. Here, acidic, slow-moving water seeps below ground.
I was introduced to this stand of pond cypress by Justin Cooler while scouting locations for the soon-to-be-released music video ‘Forgiveness’ by Jesabel. Note the high water line etched across the trunks in the background. These trees grow in the shallow, pocketed depressions found in Florida’s flatwoods. Here, acidic, slow-moving water seeps below ground. The thick, organic, saturated soil leaves little oxygen for other plant species, creating almost exclusive cypress domes. Dry periods in these ponds typically occur once or twice a year, benefiting frogs and amphibians as well as ensuring successful seed sprouting and survival. The bark is deeply furrowed and ashy brown, with an expanding trunk base that anchors the tree in muddy soil.
