A wooden stile prevents stock animals and wild ponies from accessing a sheltered area near northbound mile 499 of the Appalachian Trail. This scene was composed just past the Thomas Knob Shelter, looking south, in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area on a windy morning. Continue hiking north or south to travel the entire length of the more than 2,000-mile-long national recreation trail.
