Night at 499N, Appalachian Trail, Virginia. 2020.
A clear night passes atop the Appalachian mountains in Southwest Virginia near northbound mile 499 of the Appalachian Trail. This image was composed just beyond the Thomas Knob Shelter, looking west, following the setting sun into the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. Continue hiking north or south to travel the entire length of the more than 2,000-mile-long national recreation trail.
Captured on Ilford FP4 125 4×5 sheet film with a Caltar II-N 210mm lens. A six-hour-long exposure at f/8, this is one of my more technically-demanding images. Scanned with an Epson Perfection v850 Pro. Shot near Thomas Knob Shelter in Grayson County, Virginia on June 13, 2020.
